Spring into Virtual News

Dear Indoor Dancers,

I hope this finds You happy and healthy in these strange and shifting times. I had a sermon prepared on transformation, introspection, and setting priorities, but in the spirit of spending less time online (see priorities above), i won’t launch into it, and rather focus on letting You know what’s not happening and what is (for the confused: i’ve been expanding my culinary explorations during this time inside, and image above is of my homemade extra spicy mango pickle, which i’ll be more than happy to make for You once this is over. Whatever “this” is).

Not cancelled, but rather TRANSFORMED! My regular Tuesday evening classes at Tanzfabrik Berlin, Finding the Most Open Question, playing with and around Somatics, Performance, G*d/dess, the Universe, Time and Space, have moved ONLINE and are now part of Tanzfabrik’s online class program. Join me for 60 minutes every Tuesday at 6:30pm (Berlin time). Email me at david@davidbloom.info to register (at least an hour before the class starts) and for more info. International friends, join me in your own time zone, too! Very curious to check out various possibilities of sensing and moving within the spaces (of various sizes) that we inhabit in “real life” (outside the studio).
From April 22 on, the plan is to restart classes at Tanzfabrik’s Kreuzberg location, Wednesdays from 8 to 9:30pm, should things be open again… note the shift from Wedding to Kreuzberg and from Tuesday to Wednesday.

So the STRETCH Festival for Men*, April 10-12, has been, of course, cancelled, and my Introduction to S+x Magick class to go with it. Stay tuned for the most likely rebirth of the Festival in its Summer incarnation, July 17-19.

Also canceled, or should i say postponed: Weekend workshops on DESIRE and Performance in London (early May) and Helsinki (late May – very probably happening in October).

Presumably NOT canceled, quite a unique summer school, INNER LANDSCAPES (all the info here), organized by my friend and colleague Barbara Bess in Bavaria, at Kulturforum Fürth, from June 17-21. I will be facilitating around Desire and Performance, while Barbara will be offering Atmospheric Composition, and Christian Meier will be facilitating sessions on Body-Mind-Centering. Working with Barbara and Christian has been extremely rich for me personally, and this is a great opportunity to join us super cheaply – the lab is being supported by the city and state.

The Somatic Performance Lab addresses young performers, visual artists, dancers, who are interested in an intense, professional confrontation with the instrument that is the body in motion. For five days, we will come into movement together, research, and develop choreographic material.

Motivation letter and CV (German or English) to: landscapes@evaeuwe.com

Application deadline: May 15th, 2020

Participation fee: € 30

And for those of You missing my live piano accompaniment at HZT, Marameo, or Tanzfabrik, here’s a very short clip of a little quarantine birthday improv i did for my uncle-in-law:

Autumnal News

Dear Dance Fans!

I hope this finds You all fabulous! Fresh from performing in Akemi Nagao’s piece Juicy 💜 Metamorphosis last week, and teaching some classes on Intimacy in Process and Performance at international bondage festival EURIX, the year continues at high speed. Hope You can join me for some of the following:

This coming weekend, i will be at the Stockholm Dansfilmfestival, presenting my film Shapeshifters from 2016, the third part of the S+x & Space Trilogy, and giving an artist’s talk about it and the other parts. The festival runs all weekend, with my screening and talk happening Sunday November 3 at 5:30pm, at Dansens Hus.

Monday November 11 through Thursday November 14, daily from 10:30 to 12:00, i will be giving morning classes for professionals, Pleasure – a Contemporary Technique Class, at K3 Choreographic Center at Kampnagel in Hamburg.

Then returning to Berlin for the Body IQ Somatics Festival, at Somatische Akademie, November 15-17, where i will be teaching the workshop Men* Touching Men* on the Sunday afternoon. This festival looks at the relevance of somatic practice for an ethical, embodied, and sustainable society and i highly recommend checking it out.

Performing for handsome Martin Nachbar in his duet Einfach Tanzen (formerly Männer Tanzen, now with a more diverse rotating cast of characters) at Berlin’s FELD Theater for Young Audiences on December 18, 27, and 28. Check the website for more performances of the same show with other performers. The piece is suitable for ages 6 and up.

Also still teaching my regular Tuesday evening class Finding the Most Open Question at Tanzfabrik Wedding (in Uferstudios Berlin, Studio 3), every Tuesday at 8pm (except for Nov 12 & 26, when i will be substituted for by the ecologically sustainable Javier Cura). Come and join this exploration of somatic work into performance, and be both inside and outside your body at the same time! Radical!

Special Announcement Dept.: December 17, 12:00 to 15:00, at Uferstudios Berlin, choreographer and mom extraordinaire Juli Reinartz and i will be facilitating the workshop “Little Disasters, or Parenting While Making Art” in the frame of Tanzbüro Berlin’s peer-to-peer artist-led workshops. The title takes its inspiration from performance icon Marina Abramovic’s statement in an interview, “Having children would have been a disaster for my work. One only has limited energy in the body, and I would have had to divide it.” While not exactly trying to prove the opposite, we will nevertheless try to co-create some alternate narratives together with the participants. Kids are, needless to say, welcome! Participants without kids: also welcome!
Looking forward to seeing You around town! Sending lots of L O V E,

xxx,
David B.

February-March News

Foot Washing Ritual

Foot Washing Ritual

Happy New Gregorian, Dance Fans!

The big news is that as of shabbos two weeks ago, i’m now OFF SOCIAL MEDIA. I’m officially declaring the social media experiment FAILED and celebrated last week by going to a Tarkovsky film festival that i learned about from a POSTER IN THE SUBWAY. I’m experiencing a certain amount of FOMO (Mom & Dad, click here), but also a great deal of energy and enlightenment. Please don’t hesitate to keep me in the loop about all your goings-on, subscribe me to your mailing list, let me know about anything happening You think i might be interested in. CALL ME!

This is also happening this month and next:

TOMORROW, Wednesday February 6: Substituting for Johanne Castille Bro’s Contemporary Dance Class at Tanzfabrik Berlin at 4:45pm. Feeling spontaneous? Come over! I promise some spirals and some of my usual witty repartee.

Sonata, part two of the Sex & Space Trilogy, will be screening at the festival La Boca Erótica in Madrid on Saturday February 10 at 7pm. It will also screen at the Vienna Porn Film Festival on March 3 at 7:30pm

Odd Jobs Dept.: This coming Sunday, February 11 at 3pm, i will be giving a tour of the exhibition Archaeomusica in Brandenburg an der Havel, about an hour outside of Berlin. Don’t ask how i became an expert on musical instruments from the Stone Age through the early Middle Ages, but if You want to know the difference between a carnyx and a bird-bone flute, You should definitely join this one!

Shapeshifters, part three of Sex & Space, will be screening at the Cinekink Festival in New York City, running from March 14-18. As i will be visiting Mom, who actually lives within walking distance of the Film Anthology Archives, i will be there live and in person!

The last week of March, i will be teaching Pleasure (a contemporary technique class) at Marameo Berlin, March 24/25 at 1pm, and March 26/28/30 at 2pm.

Also from March 30-April 1 in Berlin, i will be presenting two workshops – a Foot Washing Ritual (see photo above) and Gut Feelings – at the fabulous STRETCH Festival (for men*).

April Preview: From April 3-12, i will be teaching two weeks of Pleasure (a contemporary technique class) at Tanzquartier in Vienna, with the short workshop Desire (on Intimacy in Process and Performance) interspersed on Saturday April 7. Super happy to be making my debut at this fabulous institution.

That’s it for now – i will most likely send out another missive towards the end of March and then return to my usual rhythm of sending something out every two months.

Sending lots of love out there your way, into the void. See You soon IN REAL LIFE.

xxx,
David B.

Join us for EVOLOVE at Bechyne Monastery

This beautiful residency on Embodying Conscious Futures is happening in the Czech Republic next month! Czech it out! If You’re wondering how the work we do fits into the current political landscape (i do) and how art can actually affect societal change, i feel this one has a pretty interesting combination of questions raised:
