Dear Dance Fans,
I hope this finds You thriving! In these uncertain times, all the following information is בעזרת Corona, as we say, or subject to the whims of the universe.
First off, this coming weekend, November 19-21, is the glorious Body IQ Festival at Somatische Akademie Berlin and environs. There are still tickets available to the whole festival, and the program looks amazing. The festival is attempting to tackle ambitious questions about the complex role of somatics and body-based practices in social, political, and ecological transformation.
Then, a mere WEEK LATER (how does he do it?), i am thrilled to be presenting the LIVE Premiere of the solo Alles Vergängliche at Dock11 Berlin, made (and shown online at Tanzfabrik’s Open Spaces) earlier in the year. Join me November 25-28 at 19:00 as i attempt to dance the uncertainty of the times to Gustav Mahler’s 8th symphony, and play with the news of the day (each show will be different). I am very excited indeed, as this is probably my first presentation of live stage choreography in Berlin in about 10 years (!).
Please note, both events are 2G (recovered or fully vaxxed).
So, listen, in December, barring Zombie Aplocalypse and/or Pandemic Pandemonium, the plan is currently to teach a weekend workshop on The Desire of the Space Between at motionlab cologne, December 10-12. Check out the motionlab website or contact them closer to the date to get the newest latest on those plans!
Finally, very happy to report that i was recently awarded a four-month research grant (Initial-Stipendium) from the Akademie der Künste to start work on the NEW solo, which will most likely celebrate its premiere in the fall next year, and will definitely be by far the most JEWISH piece to date! Stay tuned.
Sending love, stay healthy, and stay in touch!
Apologies for spamming You just a month after my last email – trying to keep these to quarterly announcements – but spontaneous times call for spontaneous measures. Nobody seems to be planning anything more than a few weeks in advance at the moment.
A few short items:
Next week, i will be teaching the morning classes for professionals (although i personally wish to invite a broad definition of that term) at Tanzquartier Vienna. I am really excited about returning to this fine institution, and the only thing that would excite me more is if i were physically IN THE SPACE. The good news is, Tanzquartier has currently decided to offer their online morning classes FOR FREE (€€€! $$$! ¥¥¥!) to the dance community in Vienna and elsewhere. So the other good news is that You can join wherever You are. Tuesday April 6 through Friday April 9, 10am to 11:30am daily (Vienna time!). See You there!
This coming Sunday, April 4, at 1pm Berlin time, i will be teaching at my favorite STRETCH Festival (April 1-5 altogether), always a heartwarming experience (online, of course). This time, i will be sharing a workshop on Embodied Fermentation/MicroSomatics, in which we will somatically explore the digestive system in movement, as well as discuss some practical methods for fermenting foods! Delicious AND nutritious. There are still places available, so please support the beautiful STRETCH community (and yourself) by signing up for the festival here. Video of me working some sourdough here. (STRETCH is a festival for gay, bi, trans, and queer men* and people who identify somewhere on a gender-fluid male-to-non-binary spectrum). Good gut health so essential for everything, including your immune system!
In May and June, the plan is currently (pending lack of global apocalypse) to work as artistic collaborator/assistant to director/choreographer Christopher Roman at Neuköllner Oper’s world premiere of contemporary composer Diana Sysre’s opera Mexico Aura, with performances at Humboldt Forum Berlin June 25-27 and July 1-4. I’m especially excited to be collaborating with Christopher, as i used to admire him (and the other Forsythe dancers) on stage, as a little dance student back in Frankfurt, ahem, about 20 years ago.
End of February, i showed my new solo Alles Vergängliche at Tanzfabrik Berlin’s Open Spaces series. To those of You who caught it online, congratulations! To anyone who missed it but really wishes they hadn’t, drop me a line and i’ll be happy to share the secret vimeo link. Trailer at Tanzforum Berlin here. Interview by Tanzfabrik during the rehearsal process here.
Sending love and peace around the web,
Dear Dance Lovers, Love Dancers, etc. etc.,
I hope this finds You fabulous. Or coping. It’s been a slightly, let’s say, unusual year for many of us, and one of the unusual things that happened for me personally was that i made a solo. It’s my first real “choreography” in about 5 years, my first piece for “the stage” in far longer than that, and my first solo… pretty much ever. I’ve been so interested in relationships, desire, boundaries between people for so long that i never understood how to possibly start a solo piece, but in the last two years, several things shifted around that and i actually found (most of) my time alone in the studio incredibly rich, in dialogue with my own history and present as a dancer and as a musician. The solo wrestles with Gustav Mahler’s 8th Symphony and the daily newsfeed, as two attempts to put the whole world into a limited timeframe. It will be one dancer’s attempt to process everything going on and hopefully also a celebration of the day, a performance for these times. Because the text of the day’s news is always incorporated, each performance will be different.
Alles Vergängliche streams as part of Tanzfabrik Berlin’s Open Spaces: Making It Happen on Saturday, February 27, at 18:00 Berlin time (9:00am in Oakland, 2:00am the next day in Tokyo), and on Sunday February 28, 19:00 Berlin time (12 noon in New York, 20:00 in Johannesburg). The link will be here and the videos will be public for 48 hours after the dates. Hope to “see” You “there”!
Lots of love and major respect to everyone at Tanzfabrik Berlin for supporting this project and being a pure delight to work with, as well as everyone who offered tech support, childcare support, conceptual and emotional support. You know who You are!
Sending a hug through the web, dance together soon?
Hey Dancers! Sorry for the extemporaneous email – i like to keep these to 4 a year, to avoid getting on your shit list. Just wanted to let You know that my weekly Tuesday evening class, Finding the Most Open Question at Tanzfabrik Berlin will be going back ONLINE again, as of tomorrow, November 3, due to the new regulations starting this week. Say whatever You want, i’ll miss being in the studio, but i’ll take it for living in a country right now with a femme scientist as head of state. Time will still be 8:15pm in Berlin (although the online version is only 60 minutes), and signup is through the website fitogram.
The bad news is, we’re back in the middle of a global pandemic, the good news is, You can now join my class again from Vienna, Portland, and Johannesburg! So things balance each other out.
Let me know if You have any questions!
Stay healthy, stay grounded, check out my sourdough dance video if You haven’t yet, i love You all.
See You soon!
Dear Dance Fans,
STRETCH Festival for Men* – cancelled! Xplore Festival Berlin – cancelled! White supremacy – cancelled! I was a lot sadder to see some of those go than others. Let’s transform.
Here are a few offerings in coming months:
First of all, after 3 months online, my regular weekly class Finding the Most Open Question will be happening in physical spacetime again, starting this week (July 7), still on Tuesday evenings, now at 8:15pm, and please note it will now take place at the Kreuzberg branch of Tanzfabrik Berlin (studio 3). Space is limited and registration is only possible online so please check the Tanzfabrik website for instructions and COVID guidelines. Looking forward to see You there and play with the space between! (at least 1.5 meters)
The online class may still happen from time to time for all my favorite participants in Vienna, Portland, South Africa, and elsewhere. Thank You so much for dropping in!
Excited to be teaching a workshop in real life again! And in Berlin, no less. Desire – on Intimacy in Process & Performance – will happen as part of Marameo Berlin’s summer program on August 1 & 2, 3pm to 6pm both days. We will not go into physical contact, but rather explore how socially distant times inform the desire in space. Once again, spaces are limited so sign up now!
Also this summer: really looking forward to working as an outside eye with young Hamburg-based choreographer Marcelo Dono on his new piece Grind Me, premiering September 18 at the Lichthof Theater in Hamburg.
Looking forward to connecting with all of You again soon, and figuring all of this out together.
Lots of love,
Dear Indoor Dancers,
I hope this finds You happy and healthy in these strange and shifting times. I had a sermon prepared on transformation, introspection, and setting priorities, but in the spirit of spending less time online (see priorities above), i won’t launch into it, and rather focus on letting You know what’s not happening and what is (for the confused: i’ve been expanding my culinary explorations during this time inside, and image above is of my homemade extra spicy mango pickle, which i’ll be more than happy to make for You once this is over. Whatever “this” is).
Not cancelled, but rather TRANSFORMED! My regular Tuesday evening classes at Tanzfabrik Berlin, Finding the Most Open Question, playing with and around Somatics, Performance, G*d/dess, the Universe, Time and Space, have moved ONLINE and are now part of Tanzfabrik’s online class program. Join me for 60 minutes every Tuesday at 6:30pm (Berlin time). Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to register (at least an hour before the class starts) and for more info. International friends, join me in your own time zone, too! Very curious to check out various possibilities of sensing and moving within the spaces (of various sizes) that we inhabit in “real life” (outside the studio).
From April 22 on, the plan is to restart classes at Tanzfabrik’s Kreuzberg location, Wednesdays from 8 to 9:30pm, should things be open again… note the shift from Wedding to Kreuzberg and from Tuesday to Wednesday.
So the STRETCH Festival for Men*, April 10-12, has been, of course, cancelled, and my Introduction to S+x Magick class to go with it. Stay tuned for the most likely rebirth of the Festival in its Summer incarnation, July 17-19.
Also canceled, or should i say postponed: Weekend workshops on DESIRE and Performance in London (early May) and Helsinki (late May – very probably happening in October).
Presumably NOT canceled, quite a unique summer school, INNER LANDSCAPES (all the info here), organized by my friend and colleague Barbara Bess in Bavaria, at Kulturforum Fürth, from June 17-21. I will be facilitating around Desire and Performance, while Barbara will be offering Atmospheric Composition, and Christian Meier will be facilitating sessions on Body-Mind-Centering. Working with Barbara and Christian has been extremely rich for me personally, and this is a great opportunity to join us super cheaply – the lab is being supported by the city and state.
The Somatic Performance Lab addresses young performers, visual artists, dancers, who are interested in an intense, professional confrontation with the instrument that is the body in motion. For five days, we will come into movement together, research, and develop choreographic material.
Motivation letter and CV (German or English) to: email@example.com
Application deadline: May 15th, 2020
Participation fee: € 30
And for those of You missing my live piano accompaniment at HZT, Marameo, or Tanzfabrik, here’s a very short clip of a little quarantine birthday improv i did for my uncle-in-law:
Lots of Love, virtual hugs, kisses,
Happy Goyishe New Year to all!
I hope it brings You all You want and need, and hopefully some of those are identical. 2019 finds me enormously grateful for every day i spend with those i love, doing what i love.
Here’s what i’ll be doing to spread the gospel in coming weeks:
New Ongoing Class at Tanzfabrik (Wedding): Finding the Most Open Question, every Tuesday evening, 20:00 to 21:30, starting January 29! Come join me for a research into the choreographic potential of somatic work. More fun than it sounds. Uferstudios, Studio 3! Looking forward to seeing You there!
Sending radical, unconditional, transformative love, from my heart to yours. May this be the year we all empower ourselves and each other.
After 7 weeks of working together, the wonderful participants of this Tanzfabrik Performance Project on Desire will have an informal showing to round things off on Wednesday December 19, at 9:00pm, Uferstudios Studio 3. Come!
