STRETCH Festival for Men* – cancelled! Xplore Festival Berlin – cancelled! White supremacy – cancelled! I was a lot sadder to see some of those go than others. Let’s transform.
Here are a few offerings in coming months:
First of all, after 3 months online, my regular weekly class Finding the Most Open Question will be happening in physical spacetime again, starting this week (July 7), still on Tuesday evenings, now at 8:15pm, and please note it will now take place at the Kreuzberg branch of Tanzfabrik Berlin (studio 3). Space is limited and registration is only possible online so please check the Tanzfabrik website for instructions and COVID guidelines. Looking forward to see You there and play with the space between! (at least 1.5 meters)
The online class may still happen from time to time for all my favorite participants in Vienna, Portland, South Africa, and elsewhere. Thank You so much for dropping in!
Excited to be teaching a workshop in real life again! And in Berlin, no less. Desire – on Intimacy in Process & Performance – will happen as part of Marameo Berlin’s summer program on August 1 & 2, 3pm to 6pm both days. We will not go into physical contact, but rather explore how socially distant times inform the desire in space. Once again, spaces are limited so sign up now!
Also this summer: really looking forward to working as an outside eye with young Hamburg-based choreographer Marcelo Dono on his new piece Grind Me, premiering September 18 at the Lichthof Theater in Hamburg.
Looking forward to connecting with all of You again soon, and figuring all of this out together.
Lots of love,
I hope this finds You happy and healthy in these strange and shifting times. I had a sermon prepared on transformation, introspection, and setting priorities, but in the spirit of spending less time online (see priorities above), i won’t launch into it, and rather focus on letting You know what’s not happening and what is (for the confused: i’ve been expanding my culinary explorations during this time inside, and image above is of my homemade extra spicy mango pickle, which i’ll be more than happy to make for You once this is over. Whatever “this” is).
Not cancelled, but rather TRANSFORMED! My regular Tuesday evening classes at Tanzfabrik Berlin, Finding the Most Open Question, playing with and around Somatics, Performance, G*d/dess, the Universe, Time and Space, have moved ONLINE and are now part of Tanzfabrik’s online class program. Join me for 60 minutes every Tuesday at 6:30pm (Berlin time). Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to register (at least an hour before the class starts) and for more info. International friends, join me in your own time zone, too! Very curious to check out various possibilities of sensing and moving within the spaces (of various sizes) that we inhabit in “real life” (outside the studio).
From April 22 on, the plan is to restart classes at Tanzfabrik’s Kreuzberg location, Wednesdays from 8 to 9:30pm, should things be open again… note the shift from Wedding to Kreuzberg and from Tuesday to Wednesday.
So the STRETCH Festival for Men*, April 10-12, has been, of course, cancelled, and my Introduction to S+x Magick class to go with it. Stay tuned for the most likely rebirth of the Festival in its Summer incarnation, July 17-19.
Also canceled, or should i say postponed: Weekend workshops on DESIRE and Performance in London (early May) and Helsinki (late May – very probably happening in October).
Presumably NOT canceled, quite a unique summer school, INNER LANDSCAPES (all the info here), organized by my friend and colleague Barbara Bess in Bavaria, at Kulturforum Fürth, from June 17-21. I will be facilitating around Desire and Performance, while Barbara will be offering Atmospheric Composition, and Christian Meier will be facilitating sessions on Body-Mind-Centering. Working with Barbara and Christian has been extremely rich for me personally, and this is a great opportunity to join us super cheaply – the lab is being supported by the city and state.
The Somatic Performance Lab addresses young performers, visual artists, dancers, who are interested in an intense, professional confrontation with the instrument that is the body in motion. For five days, we will come into movement together, research, and develop choreographic material.
Motivation letter and CV (German or English) to: email@example.com
Application deadline: May 15th, 2020
Participation fee: € 30
And for those of You missing my live piano accompaniment at HZT, Marameo, or Tanzfabrik, here’s a very short clip of a little quarantine birthday improv i did for my uncle-in-law:
Lots of Love, virtual hugs, kisses,
I hope this finds You happy and well!
Some early-year offerings:
After traveling last week, i am back to teaching my regular Tuesday evening class, Finding the Most Open Question, at Tanzfabrik Berlin (Wedding version, Uferstudio 3) Tuesdays at 8pm. Depending on the evening, we cover breath, bones, kidneys, Truth, Beauty, God*dess, the Universe, that sort of thing. Stop on by!
Recently, i’ve been working a bit more “behind the scenes” than usual, out of the public eye: Just came back from Frankfurt, where i taught another seminar in the M.A. of Contemporary Dance Education at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst. That’s becoming a more regular thing for me, and it’s wonderful to connect to and exchange with others who are in a process around transmission and facilitation.
Several weeks ago, i was delighted to be in Munich to work as an outside eye with Lucy Wilke and Paweł Duduś on their new production Scores that Shaped our Friendship. It’s a beautiful piece about love and vulnerability (rave review in the Süddeutsche Zeitung here) and premiered this past Thursday, but You can still catch the final Munich show tonight, Sunday, February 16 at 8pm at the Schwere Reiter.
Next week, i will head down to Franconia, where i will be teaching a workshop in the framework of artistic research for Barbara Bess’ new production BeComing. There will be an interactive sharing of the research phase at Tanzzentrale in Fürth on Sunday February 23 at 7pm.
Artist and parent extraordinaire Juli Reinartz and i will be facilitating a workshop/discussion that was postponed from December, on Little Disasters, or Parenting While Making Art, on Monday, March 2, 12-3pm at Uferstudios Berlin. Come join us, and make sure You register with Tanzbüro at firstname.lastname@example.org
On a somewhat different note, join me for the full weekend workshop BDSM & Choreography, run by Authentic Eros at The Village Berlin, March 7 & 8! This is a rare mixed gender workshop at the Village, and will explore the relationship between BDSM and choreographic practices. Register here!
Looking forward to running into You here and/or there, and stay tuned for some more workshops happening later this year in London, Helsinki, and Berlin, plus finally getting back on stage choreographically with a solo scheduled to show in the fall!
Please take a moment to check out this petition to save Uferstudios from turbo-capitalism. Berlin may not be able to completely prevent itself from becoming New York, but the city’s unique history has sparked a number of initiatives to slow things down longer than elsewhere:

Sending You lots and lots of February Love,
I hope this finds You all fabulous! It’s a busy couple of months, so will try to give You the newest latest, hippest freshest, without much embellishment, not always an easy task:
TOMORROW, Wednesday August 21, 9pm in Seattle! Sonata, my short film from 2015, will be screening as part of the “Best of SECS Fest” event at Seattle’s Grand Illusion Cinema. Everyone i know in Seattle: Go! Alice, this means YOU!
This coming Friday, August 23, from 7pm: I will be contributing to the official grand opening of a new queer, se+-positive art space in Berlin, Karada House, by performing my predictive one-on-one performance, Se+ual Fortune Telling. Come and discover your se+ual future here! I’m excited about this new space, and warmly invite You to help us inaugurate it in style. Other performers the same evening include Caritia and Bishop Black.
Continuing the Karada House opening week, i will be offering my workshop The Choreography of a Play Party, Thursday August 29, at 7:30pm. For those who keep asking me when they can take a workshop in Berlin, this is a rare opportunity. The three-hour workshop is a good introduction to the work around intimacy, desire, and boundaries that i’ve been busy with for the past 6 or so years. Sign up here!
September 3-8, near Barcelona: Facilitating two workshops, a shorter version of The Choreography of a Play Party, and my ever-popular Spanking for Beginners, at the Touch & Play Barcelona 2019 Festival: Politics of Pleasure.
From September 10, my regular Tuesday evening classes at Tanzfabrik Berlin (in Wedding, at Uferstudios, Studio 3, 8pm), restart. Come join me every week for Finding the Most Open Question, a somatic approach to performance.
And now for something completely different: Monday September 16 at 2pm, and Tuesday September 17 at 10am: performing in handsome Martin Nachbar’s piece Männer Tanzen (suggested for ages 7 and up), at the Feld Theater for Young Audiences in Berlin. Come and see me do something kid-friendly! Small theater, reservation recommended.
Sunday, October 20, & Monday, October 21: Excited to perform in my friend Akemi Nagao’s piece Verbotene Liebe, in the context of her M.A. Choreography studies at HZT Berlin, at the Ernst-Busch-Hochschule für Schauspielkunst.
November preview: Teaching morning classes (Pleasure – a contemporary technique class) at K3 Hamburg, November 11-14, and a workshop on men* touching men* at the fabulous Body IQ Festival in Berlin, November 15-17.
Congratulations if You made it this far down! Hope to see You at any and/or all of these!
Sending lots and lots of love through the ether.
Happy Spring, Dance Fans!
Some upcoming items of interest:
This coming weekend, April 6 & 7, at 4pm both days, performing with the fabulous Martin Nachbar in his duet Männer Tanzen, at the Feld Theater (formerly Theater am Winterfeldtplatz) in Berlin. The piece is intended for ages 7 and older, but i think works for slightly younger kids and adults as well. Come and watch me finally do something fun and child-friendly!
On a different note, teaching my always-popular workshop Spanking for Beginners at the stupendous STRETCH Festival (for men* of all genders), appropriately over Easter (transforming pain into salvation), April 19-21 at Tanzfabrik Berlin.
Teaching Dance Into S*x Magick in Cork, Ireland, on the weekend of May 4 & 5. Email email@example.com for more information and to register (Censorship! I was told to obscure the actual name of the workshop, lest my newsletter end up in your spam! Please add the vowel You most wish it to be, and join us in Cork!).
Also: ongoing! My regular Tuesday evening class Finding the Most Open Question, every week at 8pm (except during Pesach, April 23), at Tanzfabrik Berlin (Uferstudios branch). Come and join me to explore the somatics of performance and the performative potential of somatics! (and to learn the secret real name of the class, which i only tell participants.)
Also continuing to play piano for ballet classes around town, including this coming week at Marameo for Kevin Quinaou’s professional classes, so if You enjoy spending some time in the classical paradigm, join us and hear me play on a good piano!
Sending Love out there.
I hope it brings You all You want and need, and hopefully some of those are identical. 2019 finds me enormously grateful for every day i spend with those i love, doing what i love.
Here’s what i’ll be doing to spread the gospel in coming weeks:
New Ongoing Class at Tanzfabrik (Wedding): Finding the Most Open Question, every Tuesday evening, 20:00 to 21:30, starting January 29! Come join me for a research into the choreographic potential of somatic work. More fun than it sounds. Uferstudios, Studio 3! Looking forward to seeing You there!
Sending radical, unconditional, transformative love, from my heart to yours. May this be the year we all empower ourselves and each other.
I hope this finds You fabulous! The above notes were from a workshop i gave earlier this month to design students at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. I shared one of the wonderful tuning scores by the brilliant Lisa Nelson and asked one of the students to make a note of the tasks we were working with. Being a fine arts & design academy, it came out much nicer than i’m used to – i enjoy the mix of calligraphy and post-modern dance (and the Dutch spelling of “pause/pauze”).
This is what i’ll be up to this month and the next:
Starting November 5, and running through December 19, i’ll be facilitating a Performance Project on Desire – Intimacy in Process and Performance – at Tanzfabrik Berlin. The project is fully booked, but please come to see the final showing on December 19 at 9pm in Uferstudio 3. You can also still join the open class, Pleasure – a contemporary technique class – which will be happening before the performance project every Monday and Wednesday evening at 6:15pm, also November 5 through December 19.
From November 10 to 15, i will be rehearsing my new piece The Universe Project in the frame of a creative residency at Tanzzentrale Nürnberg. There will be a public showing at Tanzzentrale the evening of November 15, and a public conversation about the role of desire in choreography between Nuremberg-based choreographer Barbara Bess and myself at Tafelhalle Nürnberg on November 13.
And finally, on Friday November 23 & Saturday November 24, i will be presenting my one-on-one performance Sexual Fortune Telling at the marvelous PornyDays Festival in Zurich, between 6 and 10pm both days.
Hope to see You there!
Sending lots of love,
I hope this finds You all happy, healthy, and doing what You love.
Taking a short break from playing piano for the still-fabulous dancers from Tanztheater Wuppertal during their Berlin tour to give You a little update on what’s happening in my corner of the universe:
Next week, September 3 & 4, i will be co-teaching the class Muscles & Bones with ballet teacher Matthew Thomas as part of Tanzfabrik’s 40 anniversary Jubilee Edition. I’ve been playing piano for Matthew’s class for the past 12 years (!), and this is the first time we’ve been asked to facilitate together. Matthew will begin with a ballet barre, and i will take the class through an exploration of the skeletal system in space. Class is at 4:30pm on the Monday, and 7pm on the Tuesday.
September 20: Performing in Dessau at the new Bauhaus Museum (opening next year) as part of their pre-opening get-to-know-the-space program. See me perhaps trying to fit into one of those Oskar Schlemmer costumes!
October 1 & 2: Teaching a workshop at the Rietveld Academie for Fine Arts & Design in Amsterdam. Very excited to be working with the students in the TXT (Textile) department, who are focusing on space & movement this semester.
Also still places available for my Tanzfabrik Performance Project on Desire, happening every Monday & Wednesday evening from November 5 until December 19, with a showing on the 19th. Check it out here!
Wishing You a wonderful day and hoping to see You at one of these or elsewhere!
