Dear Dance Fans!

I hope this finds You all fabulous! A few short notes to let You know what’s going on in my world in the coming months.

TOMORROW, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28! – DO forgive the short notice, and then DO join me for a screening of Sonata – part two of the Sex & Space Trilogy, as part of Lick & Listen#7, at 8pm at IPA Bar Berlin. Fecunda Lab hosts this series of “ethical porn” films combined with Live Music – Sonata is being scored for the evening by musician Marcello S. Busato. Curious to see (and hear) this one.

October 18, 8:30pm, at Somatische Akademie Berlin: a showing of The Universe Project, the new dance piece i’ve been working on (last seen at the end of a Tanzfabrik Open Spaces Residency at Uferstudios in July) with dancers Paweł Dudus & Laura Eva Meuris, sound by Kay Karl and cranio-sacral dramaturgy by Nica Berndt-Caccivio. The showing is part of SINCE – Somatics in Creation, curated by Ingo Reulecke, a series featuring artists working with somatic approaches.

October 28/29, at The Village Berlin: Teaching two workshops on The Choreography of a Play Party at STRETCH IMAGINE, a festival for men*, exploring sensuality, spirituality, and community.

October 23 to November 10, at the Inter-University Center for Dance Berlin: Teaching a three-week seminar On Intimacy in Process and Performance in the B.A. “Dance, Context, Choreography” program. This is my first extended venture into university teaching, and i’m really curious and excited to see how the work goes over in that environment…

November Preview:
November 17-19, teaching the workshop The Antidote to Capitalism is Community at the Body IQ Festival, taking place at Somatische Akademie Berlin. Last year’s festival was an amazing experience, and this year’s theme is Body Democracy/Democratic Body, which speaks to my current interest in the effect that artistic work, and specifically somatics, can have on social and political realities.

Hope to see You at ALL of these things – or for a matcha latte around town… Lots of LOVE

The Universe Project at Uferstudios and Other Summer News

Naming It

Dear Dance Fans,

Before taking a bit of a Summer break for some much-needed family time, there will be a first work-in-progress showing in Berlin (following a residency at Tanzfabrik) of my new piece The Universe Project at Uferstudios (Studio 4), in the framework of Tanzfabrik’s Open Spaces/Sommer Tanz 2017:

THIS COMING THURSDAY, JULY 20, AT 7:00pm.

I will be sharing the evening with the tremendous Renae Shadler, showing her piece “And She saw that it was good”. Both pieces are part of the Naming It research project that Renae and i began last year. After several years of film work, i’m really looking forward to sharing some live moments with my collaborators, the beautiful performers Laura Eva Meuris and Paweł Dudus, and the majestic musician Kay Karl of Gong Sound Healing Arts. Cranio-Sacral Dramaturgy was provided by Nica Berndt-Caccivio, and we’ll be dancing desire, intersubjectivity, nonduality, and magick, besides everything else in the Universe. It’s free and no need to register. See You there!

At the end of the month, i will be heading to Vienna for the IDOCDE Symposium, July 28-30, in the framework of the ImPulsTanz Festival – this year’s symposium theme is “why compromise? mind the dance.” I will be giving the warmup on one of the symposium days, with a class called “The Antidote to Capitalism is Community”.

Finally, August 17-20, it is my pleasure to teach two workshops, “Group Dynamics of Desire” and “The Choreography of a Play Party”, as well as screen the Sex & Space Film Trilogy at The Summer House Weekend, at a top-secret location in the countryside outside of London, which i hear is an experience! Come join us!

Wishing You all blissful and blessed moments, and would love to reconnect with You at one of the above, or otherwise soon!

xxx,
David B.

This beautiful residency on Embodying Conscious Futures is happening in the Czech Republic next month! Czech it out! May-June News

Happy Spring, Dance Fans!

Hope this finds You fabulous! A few items for this year’s special edition of PRIMAVERA:

– This week, Thursday (May 25 at 8pm), for the first time ever, the three dance films that make up the Sex & Space Trilogy will be screened together in their entirety by Fecunda Lab at The Hole in Berlin.

– Next week, i will be in Amsterdam (unbelievably ALSO for the first time), teaching the workshop “The Conscious Tinder Experience”, on the performance of our sexual being in the digital age, and how it relates to authentic desire, whatever that may be. This is happening June 2 & 3 in the framework of the fabulous FLAM Festival. Email FLAM to register!

– The same weekend, June 2-4, Shapeshifters, part three of the Sex & Space Trilogy, will be screened at the PopPorn Festival 7 in São Paulo, Brazil!

– June 23/24, i will be heading down to Nuremberg to teach a workshop on Sex & Space to the students of the professional training program at Mind and Dance (the former Ballettförderzentrum).

– June 26-30, i will be giving the morning classes (not only) for professionals at Berlin’s classic Dock11 Studios, Monday-Friday at 10:00. Come and join me while we spiral, honor the memory of Trisha Brown, and try to help me find the at times elusive connection between pleasure, embodiment, and dance “technique”. Full class description here!

July Preview (catch the early sign-up):
In July, i am looking forward lots to be co-teaching at Evolove – an explorative residency on creating conscious futures through embodied practices and conceptual cross-pollination – in a former Franciscan monastery in the Czech Republic. The residency will happen July 8-16 and was initiated by visionary artists Moss Beynon Juckes & Javier Cura. It features a whole bunch of interesting teachers and looks at how community and also art, of all things, can support societal revolution. Really excited about this one! Check out the website for the full program here. And join us! :)

Much love and hope to see You soon at one of these or others!

April News

Me with Chili

Chili and Myself

Happy April, Dance Fans!

I hope this finds You fabulous! Greetings from Nuremberg, where i just finished up a set of shows at Tafelhalle, performing (in a top hat and tails, oddly) for the Tanztheater-riffic Susanna Curtis, in her production Alice-ecilA (Trailer here).

Here’s what else is happening this month:

April 14-16: Teaching two workshops at the wonderful STRETCH Festival in Berlin: DILFs, Leather Daddies, & Tranpa – Queering Father*hood on the Saturday (see picture with Chili above), and The Choreography of a Play Party on the Sunday. I will also be part of what looks to be a really interesting panel on Community Building on the Saturday evening. This festival for men of all identities is currently sold out but there’s an option of getting on the waiting list.

Some screenings i won’t make it to personally, but friends who are in town, please go!

SONATA, Part Two of the Sex & Space Trilogy, will be screened during the first edition of Rome’s new Hacker Porn Film Festival, which looks like a great program overall. Big auguroni to Tigrotto, Nita, and the team for making it happen! SONATA will screen three times:
April 24 as part of the opening ritual at Alibi Club
April 26, 19:00 and April 28, 18:00 as part of the shorts program at Cineclub Il Kino
Romans, have a look!

SHAPESHIFTERS, Part Three of the Trilogy, will be screened at the Athens Video Dance Project on April 27 at 22:30 as part of their Exploring Otherness.II program. If You happen to be in town for Documenta, check it out!

April 29/30, i will be teaching a Sex & Space workshop on Dance, Desire, & Performing the Erotic Body at a beautiful location in County Cork, Ireland. I believe there are still some places available so contact Andre for details and to register! Facebook event page here.

Finally, as of this week, i will be starting a new piano job playing for ballet classes once a week at HZT Berlin – many of You probably know that i was a pianist long before i ever took a dance class, and i’m very happy to be returning to my roots. The HZT class is only for the university students, but i also play for Matthew Thomas’ Monday evening class at Tanzfabrik, and have been every week for the past 10 years (!). So if You ever feel like a little classical ballet to start your week, stop on by – i love seeing familiar faces!

Much love to You all and see You soon!

December News

Happy Friday, Dance Fans!

November was so busy that i didn’t even have time to send out one of these… Australian mastermind Renae Shadler and i had a first showing of our collaborative work in progress Naming It at Lake Studios Berlin and i performed in choreographer Canan Erek’s site-specific project dance poetry in Wuppertal – some video here.

November was also a month of political fatigue, fear, and one hopes, rebirth. Not sure we need another white male opinion piece right now, so i’ll just refer You to the elegant prose of Oakland activist Cat Brooks here.
And if You think dance newsletters are no forum for politics, there’s always the unsubscribe button below.

So, December…:

Two workshops to finish the year, both on my long-researched subject of Dance, Desire, and Performing the Erotic Body:

First off, i’m super, super excited to bring секс и пространство to St. Petersburg, Russia (!) on December 10 & 11. The workshop will be happening all day both days at the Human Architecture Lab, run by the amazing Liliya Burdinskaya. Thanks Liliya for inviting me! Email Liliya for more information and to register!

And then, Berlin! For those of You who keep asking when i’ll be offering something in Berlin again, my friend and fab performer Daniel Hellmann is organizing a two-day Sex & Space workshop with myself at the marvelous ada Studio, located in the Uferstudios, December 29 & 30. If You have no plans for the dark days during what the Germans call “between the years”, come join us as we shine a little light on the end of the year. Email Daniel to register!

Wishing You lots and lots of love. Stay safe, compassionate, and curious.

Best from Berlin,
xxx,
David B.

September & October News

Kay Garnellen in Shapeshifters

Kay Garnellen in Shapeshifters

Happy September, Dance Fans!

Greetings from a hotel lobby in Zurich, Switzerland, where i’ll be joining artist Daniel Hellmann TONIGHT (September 11), at 6pm at Réunion, for a talk about BOUNDARIES, artistic and otherwise. Daniel will also be performing his piece Full Service. The talk is part of the Manifesta 11 Parallel Events.
Come spontaneously if You happen to be in town!

Loads of stuff going on these next two months, including the intergalactic premiere of Shapeshifters, third and final short film in the Sex & Space Trilogy, at the end of October in Berlin! So here’s a quick rundown (click on the links for more info):

September 17 & 18, Brussels: Sex & Space – a workshop on dance, desire, and performing the erotic body – at Volksroom. This is my first time working in Brussels, and there are still some places available, so email Thomas at residencevolksroom@gmail.com to secure a place!

September 21, Nuremberg: Teaching a Contemporary Dance Technique morning class, of all things – which i do far too rarely these days – at Tanzzentrale.

September 24: Performing for and with Susanna Curtis as part of the Bavarian Transformance cityXchange project at Tafelhalle Nuremberg. Returning to the Tanztheater roots! We’ll be showing the duet again in Regensburg on October 8.

September 30, Basel: Sonata, part two of the Sex & Space Trilogy, will be screening at 11pm as part of the festival luststreifen – queer cinema basel

October 1 & 2: Making Senses – co-teaching a workshop on movement and perception with longtime ally and collaborator Barbara Bess at the Alte Schule, near Nuremberg

October 14-16, Berlin: Teaching two workshops at the Body IQ Festival at the Somatische Akademie, on Group Dynamics of Desire – also speaking on a panel discussion about somatics moderated by Jochen Roller on the Saturday evening. This festival looks pretty interesting, with a cool lineup of teachers, and i’m really happy to be included. Looking forward to it!

October 26-30: PORN FILM FESTIVAL BERLIN, featuring (among other things) as mentioned above, the premiere of my new dance film Shapeshifters. Starring performers who usually work in porn in a fully clothed, non-explicit dance film, this one is a conceptual orgy of ideas! Check the festival website for exact screening times once they emerge.

Also at the Porn Film Festival: Artist/sex worker/pleasure activist Sadie Lune and myself will be hosting a panel on Sex-Positive Parenting!
The Berlin Porn Film Festival has seen a significant number of births within its community of sex radicals in recent years. Could it be considered the world’s most family-friendly porn festival? What are the particular challenges facing porn performers and makers, and others working with sexuality in raising kids? May there even be advantages as well?
How can we deal with social stigma attached to sex-positivity and sex work, while raising our kids to be conscious and confident about their bodies, identities, pleasure, and boundaries?

Sorry for the wordiness! Hope to see You at one or more of these and wishing You much love and happiness until we meet again!

David B.

July-August News

Shapeshifters Collage

Happy Summer, Dance Fans!

Sorry for the long silence – I’ve been heavily in research and development mode, mainly editing Shapeshifters, part THREE of the soon-to-be classic Sex & Space Trilogy (see nifty collage above). After two porn films with dancers, this one reverses the concept – it’s a dance film with porn stars, wherein Jiz Lee, Gala Vanting, Kay Garnellen, Bishop Black, & Jasko Fide talk about their performance practice & try out some contemporary dance improv tasks. This one has no sex or even nudity. Talk about radical!
Shapeshifters
is set to premiere in October 2016. More info & a trailer coming soon!
The next months see me return to public life, first off at the IDOCDE Symposium, “The Importance of Being (Un)Necessary” in Vienna, July 29-31, within the framework of the ImPulsTanz Festival at Arsenal. I’ll be hosting a lecture/interactive discussion on Conscious Sexuality Practices in Contemporary Dance Education, on Saturday, July 30, at 3:15pm.
The week directly afterwards, i’m thrilled to be presenting Sex & Space: a workshop on Dance, Desire, and Performing the Erotic Body during week 3 of ImPulsTanz, August 1-5 daily. There may still be some spaces available, so email workshopoffice@impulstanz.com to register and be part of the psychedelic and overwhelming cosmos that is ImPulsTanz.

Finally, after returning to Berlin, i’ll be switching contexts completely once again, and facilitating two workshops, Sensual Somatics and The Choreography of a Play Party, at the Liebeskunstfestival, happening just outside Berlin at the FARM, August 12-21.

Hope to catch You at one or more of these, and wishing You all the very, very best for your summer projects, professional, personal, political, and otherwise.

One Love!
xxx,
David B.

February-March News

Huzzah Dance Fans!
Greetings from Nuremberg/Fürth, the Bavarian hotspot where i’m currently working with old friend and all-around great person Barbara Bess and her company WildeVerwandteProduktionen on her new piece tonträger_ein körperkonzert.

tontraeger

Premiere will be March 17 at the Tafelhalle in Nuremberg. Further performances are March 18, 23 & 24, April 28 & 29, and May 1. If You’re in the greater Nuremberg area, stop on by!
It’s rare these days that i’m a “hired body” for someone else’s choreography, and i’m really enjoying having ZERO responsibilities for a change… just show up & rehearse, no admin, no dealing with theaters, funding, etc., while still getting to dance! Good to do this once in a while.

In other news:

FRIENDS, ROMANS, COUNTRYPEOPLE! This coming weekend, i’ll be teaching my Valentine’s Day special workshop The Choreography of a Play Party at awesome alternative space Forte Prenestino in Rome as part of the festival Le Frociate.
February 13 & 14, 11:00 to 18:00 both days. Register NOW at lefrociate@gmail.com
Full workshop description HERE, FB event HERE.

And – MARCH SCREENINGS:

Sonata

Sonata

SONATA, second part of the Sex & Space Trilogy, will be screening at Cinekink 2016 in New York City, at the Film Anthology Archives, on March 3 at 7pm. It’s always especially exciting for me to have my work shown in my spiritual home town.

And Quintet – a choreopornographic experiment, the first part of the series, from 2013, isn’t dead yet either, as it will be screening at the Festival Je(ux) de Genres at the Théâtre Massenet in Lille, France, on March 10, at 8pm.

Also, hard at work editing PART THREE of the Trilogy after completing principal photography last month! More on that soon…

Sadly, i won’t be able to attend the screenings in either NYC or Lille, but if You make it, let me know. I love having a spy in the audience!

Sending You all much love, many kisses, and all the best for your own projects, lives, loves, connections!
